Find Your Passion

By Dr. Anderson

"Don't ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what it is that makes you come alive, and then go do that. Because what the world needs are more people who have come alive"

Harold Thurman

I thought this was a great quote and it really got me to thinking about the whole concept of pursuing what we love. We are always told to do what we love and the money will come. Do what we love and the happiness and fulfillment will be plentiful.

I was reading a book this weekend that highlighted the importance of this concept. It is a book called "Talent is Overrated" where Geoff Colvin talks about how the most suceesful people on the planet are that way because they work hard in a particular and disciplined way. Those that are world class at what they do consistently exhibit deliberate practice. He describes deliberate practice as composed of several elements

1) It is actively designed specifically to improve performance,

2) requires a teacher, mentor or instructor,

3) Must be repeated a lot,

4) Feedback on results must be constantly available,

5) It is highly demanding mentally, and

6) It isn't that much fun.

It sound a little painful and I got to thinking that there is no way you would practice anything in this diligent fashion if you did not have a passion for it. I suppose that is why most people that reach world class have a passion and love of what they are doing.

A question that often comes up is... "I don't know what I want, what I love what I truly have a passion to pursue".  In my experience I have found that this is almost never true.

Part of you- your essential self knows your desires at every moment of everyday. Anytime you think you don't know what you want, what you love or what you have a passion for it's because your social self (that part of you that cares too much what everyone else will think of you) has decided you shouldn't want it.

Listen to your heart, be authentic, follow your passions. You know what they are. And when you move towards them. Success will not be far behind.
